2021 Club By Club List Management Tools

For a while I’ve been trying to figure out how to create as many impartial, simple-to-understand tools when attempting to analyse an AFL list. Things that you can look at and instantly glean knowledge from.

It’ll be an ongoing project, but for this year here are three tools which I’ve found extremely useful and I hope will be the same for everyone reading.

Before I explain each part and everyone scrolls to their respective team, can I emphasise that I’m as sure as sure can be there’ll be a typo or three somewhere in the graphics. If you see one, please feel free to let me know, either in the comments or over on Twitter and I’ll fix it up.

Along the same lines, if you have any ideas for things you’d like to see, or specific time frames you’d like to see analysed; i.e. a team’s record inside 50 for the second half of the season, the lines of communication are always open.

A usual reminder that you can subscribe to The Shinboner via email on your right (on desktop) or below this post (on mobile). If you’re on Twitter you can follow me @rickm18 and to share this post on social media, you can use any of the buttons at the bottom of this post.

Minutes Played By Age

Medical substitutes being awarded a game this year have messed with the trusty method of judging sides on games played. To use Brisbane’s Tom Berry as an example, he’s listed as having made 11 appearances in 2021, which seems perfectly normal.

Then you dig a little deeper to find five of those matches were as an unused sub. Three more came replacing Jarrod Berry, Darcy Gardiner and Mitch Robinson after their respective injuries. After all that you’re left with only three ‘full’ games, making the number 11 feel pointless.

That prompted a light bulb moment – what if you looked at total minutes played by each player and then sorted it by age?

Once you match this up with list demographics it gives some interesting results. For example, although West Coast has one of the oldest lists in the league they still gave a solid chunk of minutes to players not quite hitting their prime yet.

A look at Collingwood confirms a side very much in the starting position of rejigging their list, with minutes spread out evenly from young to old, while teams like Adelaide and Gold Coast fit right into expectations.

List Demographics

A self-explanatory one really, breaking down each team by age. I’ve attempted to keep track of delistings and retirements up until this point, hence the strike through text on certain players. In the interests of consistency I’ve attempted to strike through free agents who have announced they’re leaving – i.e. Jake Kelly – and kept potential trades – i.e. Callum Coleman-Jones – clean. We all know how quickly the latter can change.

Contracts

So there’s no confusion on this, none of the info in these graphics comes from me. It’s all aggregated either from work actual journalists have done, or club and AFL announcements. If I haven’t been able to find a link for any players, you’ll see their name next to ‘unknown details’ just under the team heading. At time of writing I have nine players whose status I haven’t been able to find, not including soon to sign free agents like Mabior Chol and Jake Kelly.

If someone’s Googling skills are better than mine, feel free to announce that by flicking through a link to the relevant players.

  1. Nice post, good to have a flick through some of the numbers. Could I suggest possibly adding a median and mean for minutes played by age v the rest of the competition as it would easier highlight where your respective side sits without having to go through a bunch of teams to get a good feel for it.

  2. Wow!

    This fantastic.

    Thank you for your effort.

    All the best

He asked: “ Do you know why Indian rain dancers always create rain?” “No poppa” she said. “Because they don’t stop dancing ‘till the rain comes.” In these challenging times. Keep safe but let’s all keep dancing ‘til better times come. Thank you Abby Crawford, for this inspiring true story.
